The first woman Sughra Ahmed appointed president of the Islamic Society of Britain, Sughra Ahmed,
THE first woman to be appointed president of the Islamic Society of Britain, Sughra Ahmed, will give the next Ferguson Lecture at Bishop’s Stortford College.
She will give an insight into Islam, Christianity and British Muslims.
The Ferguson Lectures are a programme to provide opportunities for people to meet, discuss and ponder on a wide range of contemporary topics, named after an eminent former pupil Professor John Ferguson to commemorate his outstanding contribution to education.
Sughra, pictured, is programmes manager at the Woolf Institute in the Centre for Policy and Public Education at Cambridge, where she has responsibility for the design and delivery of research and training on issues such as faith, belief, integration and cohesion.
Previously, she worked as research fellow in the Policy Research Centre where she explored the migratory and settlement experiences of first generation Muslim women and men in the UK, and worked with a number of organisations to consider the issues young people face whilst growing up in the UK and the impact of this on wider British communities. She has published a number of papers and key reports – Seen and Not Heard: Voices of Young British Muslims (2009) andBritish by Dissent (2014).
Sughra is a trustee of the Inter Faith Network UK, the president of Islamic Society of Britain and an advisor to FaithxChange. She has a BA (Hons) in English language and literature and an MA in Islamic studies. She is also a qualified chaplain and holds a diploma in Islamic jurisprudence.
Active in interfaith work both locally and nationally working with organisations to help build stronger and more effective relationships across faith and beliefs, Sughra regularly contributes to debates in the media and is a contributor to Radio 2’s Pause for Thought. She was recently awarded the Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Award, for Muslim Woman of the Year at the British Muslim Awards.

UK Muslim women boxers enter the ring, fearless fighters
I have come to an amateur boxing club based in Sandy's community centre in Craigmillar to smack a battered punchbag with British student boxing champion Saira Tabasum. Next week Tabasum will take a starring role in No Guts, No Heart, No Glory, a play developed by former UK female boxing champion Ambreen Sadiq and theatre company Common Wealth. Via monologues set in a ring, the site-specific show tells the stories of teenage Muslim women from Bradford: young, fearless women who obliterate convention by boxing.
"Someone said why don't you do a play about FGM or honour killings, but in a way we actually are," says No Guts' director and producer Evie Manning. "We're tackling the issue before it happens. It's about having the confidence to follow your dream."
The play focuses on those who have challenged their premeditated futures, its writers crafting characters far removed from the submissive stereotypes of Muslim women found in mainstream culture. "There's a massive invisibility of Muslim women in the media. So this play gives them a wider platform for their voice."
Unlike Common Wealth's last run at the fringe – Our Glass House, created from testimonies of real-life domestic abuse cases – this aims to glorify rather than lament: "We're kind of celebrating," says Manning. "We don't really linger on oppression for very long. It gets a mention but we didn't want to do the typical Asian storylines where you have someone struggling against the hijab – we're not interested in that. We just want to show five very confident women onstage and we don't need to show all the bullshit that goes with that."
As I stand at a 45-degree angle with my fists raised, the smell of stale sweat wafting through the air with every swipe of the glove, I grit my teeth. "You don't have hate for the other person," Tabasum assures me, quashing my preconception about the bravado of boxing in one blow. "You see people hugging it out after a fight. In minutes you can be finished and thanking someone for the experience."
After its week in Edinburgh the show will transfer to Huggy's boxing gym in Bradford and Moss Side fire station boxing gym in Manchester. Inspiring, but without the weight of worthiness, it is well worth leaving the pleasantries of the theatre for.

TWO women of Moroccan origins were assigned ministerial posts in the newly formed French government announced on Tuesday evening by President Francois Hollande.
Myriam El-Khomri was appointed minister of urban affairs, youth and sports while Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who was minister of women’s rights in the resigned cabinet, was given the education portfolio.
Belkacem, who was born in 1977 in Bni Chiker in north Morocco, is the first woman to be assigned the ministerial post of education in France.
She was first appointed minister of women’s rights and government spokesperson on May 2012 but last April she was appointed the position of minister of women’s rights, the city, youth and sports.
El-Khomri was born in Rabat in 1978. She was elected twice as councilor in the Paris’ city council and she has also worked in the office of Paris’ mayor.

Rachida Dati warns French the Sarkozy protege
Rachida Dati, a French centre-right MEP and former justice minister under President Nicolas Sarkozy, who now represents French people living in Britain, has appealed to voters to turn out in this week's elections to the European parliament to combat the threat of "ultra-violent, ultra-racist and populist" parties.
Opinion polls in France suggest the far-right Front National (FN) could win up to a quarter of votes and a record number of seats in the European parliament, with the opposition UMP in second place and the ruling Socialists trailing in third.
Dati, who is standing for re-election, told the Observer: "It's the level of abstention that worries me. Non-participation will be the key. If people don't go out and vote there's the risk that Europe speaks for no one, which raises questions about its legitimacy and that boosts extremes."
She added: "What we are seeing with the extremes across Europe is that they are not a homogeneous group. They are very different and they don't agree among themselves. Britain has its parties as does France and other countries. But if people don't vote, we risk having a bloc of extreme parties, some of whom are ultra-violent, ultra-racist and populist."
She said: "People are exasperated and disgusted with Europe, not by conviction but because of its caprices. They hear European officials saying 'well yes, we know you are suffering but you have to accept it's going to take another 10 years to get out of this' and they ask themselves what these people know about suffering.
"The politicians are seen as remote… they don't very often come into contact with voters. Even in France we have MEPs who are standing for the fifth time and French people haven't a clue who they are. These are people who consider they don't have to give an account of themselves to the electorate and so they don't. So we should not really be surprised if voters aren't interested in Europe or vote for extremes."
France's UMP party, which won a majority of seats in the 2009 European elections, is campaigning on a broadly conservative manifesto that calls for reform of the Schengen travel area (it opposes Romania and Bulgaria being part of it), tighter European borders to keep out EU and other immigrants and no further enlargement in general (or admission for Turkey in particular).
Sitting in her office in the wealthy 7th arrondissement of Paris, Dati said: "Campaigning is complicated. France is going through an extremely hard crisis, unemployment is rising daily. What advances can we offer the public?"
Dati's one-time cabinet colleague, the former prime minister François Fillon, warned that voting FN would bring France country nothing but "a detestable image". "Whether it's a national or an European election, if an extreme party wins, then it gives a detestable image of that country's political class."
Dati spoke as polls showed that a majority – 62% – of French people were "interested" in the elections, but that 75% thought they would "change nothing" in their country. She would like to see a complete overhaul of European institutions. "Brussels and its technocrats have been rejected by the French," she said recently.
She told the Observer: "We cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater. I'm a committed European and believe Europe is necessary for France and other nations in order to remain at the world table. "France is still the motor of Europe, as it should be given that the idea of Europe was French. But I consider the future of France's influence [in the world] depends on its presence in the European Union."

Nikahilah kami, lindungilah kami, sayangilah kami (terhindar) dari neraka perawan tua..
عندما اقترب عمري من العشرين كنت أحلم كأي فتاة بشاب ملتزم ذي خلق وكنت أبني الأفكار والآمال، وكيف سنعيش وكيف سنربي أطفالنا، و….و…. إلخ.
Ketika umurku mendekati 20 tahun, aku pernah mengimpikan seperti gadis lainnya, untuk mendapatkan seorang pemuda (ikhwan) yang konsisten dengan agamanya, berakhlak mulia, ketika itu akupun mulai menyusun pikiran dan angan-angan, dan bagaimana cara mendidik anak kami, dan… dan… seterusnya.
وكنت من النوع الذي يحارب التعدد والعياذ بالله، فبمجرد أن يقولوا لي فلان تزوج على زوجته تجدني، من غير شعور، أدعو عليه وأقول: لو كنت مكانها لرميته مثلما رماني،
Aku adalah termasuk orang yang memerangi poligami –semoga Allah melindungi dari sikap itu- sehingga, semata-mata mereka mengatakan kepadaku: si fulan menikah lagi, aku lepas control, sehingga aku melaknat laki-laki itu, dan mengatakan, kalau aku di posisi istrinya aku akan melakukan seperti apa yang dilakukan kepadaku.
وكنت دائما أتناقش مع أخي وأحياناً مع عمي عن التعدد ويحاولون أن يقنعوني وأنا متعندة لا أريد أن أقتنع، وأقول لهم مستحيل أن تشاركني امرأة أخرى في زوجي.
Dan aku selalu berdebat dengan saudara laki-lakiku, dan terkadang dengan pamanku tentang poligami, mereka berusaha untuk meyakinkan kepadaku untuk menerimanya, namun aku tetapi berkeras kepala dan tidak ingin menerimanya, akupun mengatakan kepada mereka, “ mustahil wanita lain menyertaiku dalam suamiku.
أحيانا كنت أتسبب في مشكلة بين زوج وزوجته لأنه يريد أن يتزوج عليها وأحرضها عليه حتى تثور ثائرتها عليه.
Terkadang, aku menjadi penyebab (actor) dalam pertingkaian antara suami dan istri, karena suaminya ingin menikah lagi, dan akupun mempropokasinya sehingga ia memberontak kepada suaminya.
ومرت الأيام وأنا أنتظر فارس أحلامي، انتظرت لكنه تأخر وانتظرت وقارب عمري الثلاثين.
Hari-hari pun berlalu, sedengankan aku menunggu dan menunggu arjuna (udo –minang) impianku, namun tak kunjung datang, aku selalu menunggu sementara umurku sudah mendekati 30 tahun.
يا إلهى ماذا أفعل؟ هل أخرج وأبحث عن عريس؟ لا أستطيع، سيقولون هذه لا تستحي، إذاً ماذا أفعل؟ ليس لي إلا الانتظار، وفي يوم من الأيام كنت جالسة وسمعت إحداهن تقول: (فلانة عنست)، قلت في نفسي مسكينة فلانة لقد عنست .. ولكن … فلانة إنه اسمي!!
Ya Allah, apa yang aku lakukan? Apakah aku keluar dan mencari marapulai (penganten laki-laki minang), aku tidak bisa, mereka akan mengatakan, tidakkah pertua (perawan tua) itu malu? Lalu apa yang aku lakukan? Tiada lain bagiku kecuali penantian. Pada suatu hari, aku duduk, dan aku mendengar selah seorang wanita mengatakan: si fulanah sudah menjadi perawan tua, akupun mengatakan dalam hati ku, wah… sangat kasihan si fulanah itu dia telah menjadi pertua, namun… si fulanah itu taunya namaku
يا إلهي إنه اسمي أنا أصبحت عانسة، صدمة قوية جداً مهما وصفتها فلن تحسوا بها، وأصبحت أمام الأمر الواقع أنا عانس.
Ya Allah, tahunya namaku, aku sudah menjadi perawan tua? Shok / trauma yang kuat sekali, bagaimanapun aku mengambarkannya kalian tidak akan bisa merasakannya, aku sudah berada di depan realita, aku adalah perawan tua.
وبدأت أراجع حساباتي ماذا أفعل؟ الوقت يمضي والأيام تمر أريد أن أصرخ، أريد زوجاً أريد رجلاً أقف بظله يعينني ويقضي أموري، أريد أن أعيش أريد أن أنجب أريد أن أتمتع بحياتي.
Akupun mulai menghitung-hitung , apa yang akan aku lakukan, sementara waktu terus berjalan, hari-hari terus berlalu, aku ingin berteriak, aku ingin seorang suami, aku ingin seorang laki-laki, yang mana aku berdiri di naungannya, yang akan membantuku dan memenuhi kebutuhanku, aku ingin hidup, aku ingin punya anak, aku ingin menikmati hidupku.
جاءني أخي الأكبر ذات مرة وقال لي: لقد جاءك اليوم عريس فرددته، ومن غير شعور مني قلت له لماذا؟ حرام عليك ، قال لي لأنه يريدك زوجة ثانية على زوجته وأنا أعرف أنك تحاربين التعدد.
وكدت أصرخ في وجهه: ولماذا لم توافق؟! أنا راضية أن أكون زوجة ثانية أو ثالثة أو رابعة!
Suatu kali, abangku mendatangiku dan berkata: “hari ini telah datang seorang marapulai untukmu, tapi aku telah menolaknya” dengan spontanitas aku berkata: kenapa? Tidak boleh?, abangku mengatakan kepadaku: “karena ia ingin menjadikanmu istri kedua dan aku tahu kamu memerangi poligami”. Hamper aku berteriak di hadapan wajahnya: “ kenapa abang tidak menyetujuinya? Aku rela untuk menjadi istri kedua, atau ke tiga, atau keempat.
الآن أدركت حكمة الله في التعدد وهذه حكمة واحدة جعلتني أقبل فكيف بحكمه الأخرى؟ اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي فقد كنت جاهلة.
Sekarang aku mengatahui hikmah Allah dalam berpoligami, ini adalah satu hikmah yang telah membuatku menerimanya, bagaimana dengan hikmah yang lain???? Ya Allah, ampunilah dosaku, sungguh aku tidak mengetahui.”
وهذه كلمة أوجهها إلى الرجال أقول لكم: عددوا، تزوجوا واحدة وثانية وثالثة ورابعة بشرط (القدرة والعدل)، أنقذونا من نار العنوسة فنحن بشر مثلكم نحس ونتألم، استرونا ارحمونا.
Ini seruan aku berikan kepada kaum laki-laki, aku katakan kepada kalian: berpoligamilah, menikahlah satu, dua, tiga dan empat, dengan syarat ( ada kemampuan dan bersikap adil), selamatkanlah kami dari neraka pertua, kami adalah manusia, kami merasakan, kami pilu, lindungilah kami, sayangilah kami.

وكنت من النوع الذي يحارب التعدد والعياذ بالله، فبمجرد أن يقولوا لي فلان تزوج على زوجته تجدني، من غير شعور، أدعو عليه وأقول: لو كنت مكانها لرميته مثلما رماني،
Aku adalah termasuk orang yang memerangi poligami –semoga Allah melindungi dari sikap itu- sehingga, semata-mata mereka mengatakan kepadaku: si fulan menikah lagi, aku lepas control, sehingga aku melaknat laki-laki itu, dan mengatakan, kalau aku di posisi istrinya aku akan melakukan seperti apa yang dilakukan kepadaku.
وكنت دائما أتناقش مع أخي وأحياناً مع عمي عن التعدد ويحاولون أن يقنعوني وأنا متعندة لا أريد أن أقتنع، وأقول لهم مستحيل أن تشاركني امرأة أخرى في زوجي.
Dan aku selalu berdebat dengan saudara laki-lakiku, dan terkadang dengan pamanku tentang poligami, mereka berusaha untuk meyakinkan kepadaku untuk menerimanya, namun aku tetapi berkeras kepala dan tidak ingin menerimanya, akupun mengatakan kepada mereka, “ mustahil wanita lain menyertaiku dalam suamiku.
أحيانا كنت أتسبب في مشكلة بين زوج وزوجته لأنه يريد أن يتزوج عليها وأحرضها عليه حتى تثور ثائرتها عليه.
Terkadang, aku menjadi penyebab (actor) dalam pertingkaian antara suami dan istri, karena suaminya ingin menikah lagi, dan akupun mempropokasinya sehingga ia memberontak kepada suaminya.
ومرت الأيام وأنا أنتظر فارس أحلامي، انتظرت لكنه تأخر وانتظرت وقارب عمري الثلاثين.
Hari-hari pun berlalu, sedengankan aku menunggu dan menunggu arjuna (udo –minang) impianku, namun tak kunjung datang, aku selalu menunggu sementara umurku sudah mendekati 30 tahun.
يا إلهى ماذا أفعل؟ هل أخرج وأبحث عن عريس؟ لا أستطيع، سيقولون هذه لا تستحي، إذاً ماذا أفعل؟ ليس لي إلا الانتظار، وفي يوم من الأيام كنت جالسة وسمعت إحداهن تقول: (فلانة عنست)، قلت في نفسي مسكينة فلانة لقد عنست .. ولكن … فلانة إنه اسمي!!
Ya Allah, apa yang aku lakukan? Apakah aku keluar dan mencari marapulai (penganten laki-laki minang), aku tidak bisa, mereka akan mengatakan, tidakkah pertua (perawan tua) itu malu? Lalu apa yang aku lakukan? Tiada lain bagiku kecuali penantian. Pada suatu hari, aku duduk, dan aku mendengar selah seorang wanita mengatakan: si fulanah sudah menjadi perawan tua, akupun mengatakan dalam hati ku, wah… sangat kasihan si fulanah itu dia telah menjadi pertua, namun… si fulanah itu taunya namaku
يا إلهي إنه اسمي أنا أصبحت عانسة، صدمة قوية جداً مهما وصفتها فلن تحسوا بها، وأصبحت أمام الأمر الواقع أنا عانس.
Ya Allah, tahunya namaku, aku sudah menjadi perawan tua? Shok / trauma yang kuat sekali, bagaimanapun aku mengambarkannya kalian tidak akan bisa merasakannya, aku sudah berada di depan realita, aku adalah perawan tua.
وبدأت أراجع حساباتي ماذا أفعل؟ الوقت يمضي والأيام تمر أريد أن أصرخ، أريد زوجاً أريد رجلاً أقف بظله يعينني ويقضي أموري، أريد أن أعيش أريد أن أنجب أريد أن أتمتع بحياتي.
Akupun mulai menghitung-hitung , apa yang akan aku lakukan, sementara waktu terus berjalan, hari-hari terus berlalu, aku ingin berteriak, aku ingin seorang suami, aku ingin seorang laki-laki, yang mana aku berdiri di naungannya, yang akan membantuku dan memenuhi kebutuhanku, aku ingin hidup, aku ingin punya anak, aku ingin menikmati hidupku.
جاءني أخي الأكبر ذات مرة وقال لي: لقد جاءك اليوم عريس فرددته، ومن غير شعور مني قلت له لماذا؟ حرام عليك ، قال لي لأنه يريدك زوجة ثانية على زوجته وأنا أعرف أنك تحاربين التعدد.
وكدت أصرخ في وجهه: ولماذا لم توافق؟! أنا راضية أن أكون زوجة ثانية أو ثالثة أو رابعة!
Suatu kali, abangku mendatangiku dan berkata: “hari ini telah datang seorang marapulai untukmu, tapi aku telah menolaknya” dengan spontanitas aku berkata: kenapa? Tidak boleh?, abangku mengatakan kepadaku: “karena ia ingin menjadikanmu istri kedua dan aku tahu kamu memerangi poligami”. Hamper aku berteriak di hadapan wajahnya: “ kenapa abang tidak menyetujuinya? Aku rela untuk menjadi istri kedua, atau ke tiga, atau keempat.
الآن أدركت حكمة الله في التعدد وهذه حكمة واحدة جعلتني أقبل فكيف بحكمه الأخرى؟ اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي فقد كنت جاهلة.
Sekarang aku mengatahui hikmah Allah dalam berpoligami, ini adalah satu hikmah yang telah membuatku menerimanya, bagaimana dengan hikmah yang lain???? Ya Allah, ampunilah dosaku, sungguh aku tidak mengetahui.”
وهذه كلمة أوجهها إلى الرجال أقول لكم: عددوا، تزوجوا واحدة وثانية وثالثة ورابعة بشرط (القدرة والعدل)، أنقذونا من نار العنوسة فنحن بشر مثلكم نحس ونتألم، استرونا ارحمونا.
Ini seruan aku berikan kepada kaum laki-laki, aku katakan kepada kalian: berpoligamilah, menikahlah satu, dua, tiga dan empat, dengan syarat ( ada kemampuan dan bersikap adil), selamatkanlah kami dari neraka pertua, kami adalah manusia, kami merasakan, kami pilu, lindungilah kami, sayangilah kami.
وهذه كلمة أوجهها إلى أختي المسلمة المتزوجة…
Ini seruan aku berikan kepada saudariku muslimah yang telah menikah…
احمدي الله على هذه النعمة لأنك لم تجربي نار العنوسة وأرجو ألا تغضبي إذا أراد زوجك الزواج من أخرى، لا تمنعيه بل شجعيه..
Sanjunglah Allah atas nikmat ini, karena ukhti belum pernah merasakan neraka pertua, aku berharap janganlah ukhti marah jika suami ukhti ingin menikah lagi dengan wanita lain, janganlah anda halangi dia, akan tetapi doronglah ia.
أنا أعرف أن هذا صعب عليك ولكن احتسبي الأجر عند الله، انظري إلى حال أختك العانس والمطلقة والأرملة، من لهم؟ اعتبريها أختك وسوف تنالين الأجر العظيم بصبرك ..
Aku tahu, bahwa ini sulit bagimu, akan tetapi, harapkanlah pahala di sisi Allah, lihatlah kondisi saudarimu yang pertua, janda cerai, janda kematian suami, siapakah yang mendampingi mereka? Anggaplah dia saudarimu, anda akan meraih anugerah yang besar disebabkan kesabaranmu..
تقولين لي يأتي أعزب ويتزوجها أقول لك انظري إلى إحصائيات السكان، إن عدد النساء أكثر من الرجال بكثير ولو تزوج كل رجل بواحدة لأصبح معظم نسائنا عوانس، لا تفكري في نفسك فقط بل فكري فينا
Mungkin ukhti mengatakan kepadaku, seorang pemuda akan datang, dan akan menikahinya. Maka aku mengatakan kepada ukhti: “lihatlah kepada sensus penduduk, sesungguhnya jumlah wanita jauh lebih banyak daripada laki-laki, jika setiap laki-laki menikahi seorang wanita saja, pastilah kebanyakan wanita akan menjadi perawan tua, janganlah ukhti memikirkan diri sendiri saja, akan tetapi pikirkanlah kami.
أموت حرقة عندما أرى زوجا ممسك بيد زوجته ، وتهيج مشاعري ، ولكن بلا فائدة ؟؟؟؟
Aku mati kebakaran ketika melihat seorang suami yang menggenggam tangan istrinya, perasaanku bergejolak, tapi tanpa manfaat???
